New PBS Videos via NC LIVE

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

The Library is happy to announce the launch of more than 100 new PBS videos available now through the NC LIVE Video Collection, including the complete 14-part award-winning Civil Rights Era documentary, Eyes on the Prize.

The new videos also include the popular Ken Burns’ series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, and Masterpiece Theater titles including Wuthering Heights, Turn of the Screw, Wind in the Willows, Anna Karenina, and many more.

NC LIVE received a LSTA grant from the State Library of North Carolina and the Department of Cultural Resources to purchase the PBS videos. A partnership between NC LIVE and the Department of Public Instruction extends the reach of the online video collection to all k-12 public schools, where teachers and students can stream the videos in classrooms across the state.

In addition to the nearly 100 new PBS videos added, NC LIVE is also making available a collection of local oral history documentaries produced in Wilkes County, NC. Previously only available to watch on DVD in the library at Wilkes Community College, these high-quality documentaries about the people of Wilkes County are now available to watch in your home or classroom, anytime. The videos were created by the Save Our Wilkes County History Committee to document, explore, and preserve the county’s past.

Randall Library Hours 2011/2012

Randall Library provides extended hours for UNCW students, faculty, and staff and is open 107 hours each week.  Effective fall semester, 2011, the library will operate on a 19/5 schedule with the following open and closing times:

Sunday                   12 Noon – 2 a.m.
Monday – Friday       7 a.m. – 2 a.m.
Friday                     7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday                 12 Noon – 6 p.m.

Access to the library after 8 p.m. Sunday – Thursday is restricted to UNCW students, faculty, and staff and is controlled by a card access security system. A valid University ID (UNCW One Card) is required to gain access.

This change in operating hours from a 24/5 schedule is part of a series of measures to improve the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff. Security guard schedules will be modified to support the new hours and guards will work from 7:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. Security guards will perform building and area patrols at regular intervals.
