The TOC-L series of TOC analyzers adopts the 680oC combustion catalytic oxidation method which was developed by Shimadzu and now used worldwide. The detection limit of this particular model is 0.5 mg/L (0.5 ppm) and can be upgraded to produce a detection limit of 4 ug/L (4 ppt). The system has a NDIR detector and the combustion catalytic oxidation method makes it possible to efficiently oxidize not only easily-decomposed, low molecular weight organic compounds, but also hard-to-decompose insoluble and macromolecular organic compounds.

The Genesys 10 S UV-Vis spectrometer is an instrument designed for basic QA/QC, routine analysis, and educational laboratories. The Genesys 10 S has an integrated 6-Cell Changer, out-of-plane monochromator configuration, xenon flash lamp light source, dual silicon photodiodes detector, and can acquire scanning, fixed wavelength, kinetics, or concentration data using the embedded software. The lab maintains three of these instruments, each operated by the Vision Lite software and each capable of scanning 190-1100 nm.

The AUTOPOL I polarimeter is designed for less demanding applications but still provides quality results concerning starch, flavor, chemical, natural product, sugar, vitamin, and fragrance analysis. Manufactured as an entry-level polarimeter, this instrument boasts the same high quality optics as its more expensive counterparts using a Glan Thompson Calcite Polarizer which is composed of a carbon crystalline structure similar to diamond and has excellent light transmission characteristics. The AUTOPOL I is a single wavelength instrument that operates at 589 nm (Sodium D-Line) and can report opticalrotation, specific rotation, or concentration data.

The Mettler Toledo MP50 system is a one-click melting point apparatus that can analyze four samples at once. It only takes one press on the touch screen to start an individually store measurement program and the instrument does the rest, allowing you to attend to other important issues. The device is fitted with a color touch screen that allows direct one finger control and a gray-scale video recording is taken of every measurement allowing the analyst to have direct visual examination of unexpected results. Videos can be easily played back on the instrument display. The instrument can provide melting points up to 300oC.

The purge and trap concentrator, with a 72 sample autosampler, leads the way laboratories perform Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) testing. By bubbling a purge gas through the sample matrix, the VOCs are removed and collected on an analytical trap. After the purging is complete, the trap is heated and the VOCs are released and delivered to the Shimadzu GCMS QP2010S for separation and detection. The system’s “heat & soul” is the Teledyne Hastings Mass Flow Controller which allows an instantaneous change to the gas flows and pressures at any time during the purge & trap process.

The Metrohm 883 Basic Ion Chromatograph (IC) Plus is an intelligent, very compact ion chromatograph for training and routine applications. The 883 allows quantitative and qualitative testing of anions, cations, organic acids, and other polar substances with and without chemical suppression. The laboratory also houses a large assortment of cation and anion columns and a 36 sample autosampler for these three instruments. Each IC operates with the MagICnet software package.

Each balance will also allow the user to set user ID, alphanumeric batch label and sample number, and the balances can comply with ISO/GLP requirements. Each balance is equipped with a Dot Matrix receipt printer. Ruggedly designed, the laboratory maintains 9 of these balances which provides the perfect solution for general and industrial laboratory weighing applications.

The RV 10 Rotary Evaporator sets new standards for safety, efficiency, and ease of use. The model features a lifting mechanism that raises the evaporator piston out of the heating bath in case of a power outage, interval operation, smooth start, end position recognition, and a timer function. A digital temperature display is also included on the model as well as a water/oil bath with a powerful 1300 Watt heater capable of delivering temperatures from room temperature to 180oC.

The Varian Atomic Absorption / Emission (AA/AE) 240 FS brings the productivity and speed of analysis of ICP-OES to AA. Just like an ICP-OES, the AA 240 FS measures all elements in each sample, before progressing to subsequent samples. Conventional AA systems still determine one element at a time, repeating all samples for each element in turn. The AA 240 FS provides complete results for each sample within minutes. The instrument is also equipped with the Vapor Generation Accessory (VGA) attachment allowing the analysis of mercury and other hydride forming elements at the part per billion (ppb) levels.

Excellent for routine and quality control laboratories, the instrument allows the analyst to scan from 190 to 1,100 nm with a narrow 1.8 nm optical bandwidth. Scans at up to 4000 nm/min are displayed with peaks and valleys tabulated. With straylight of 0.01%, wavelength precision of 0.1 nm and baseline stability of better than +/- 0.00A/hr, the most demanding analytical work may be undertaken. Scans of up to 6 screen widths may be viewed by scrolling. All spectra are printed on an integral printer. The laboratory maintains 6 of these instruments.

This scanning infrared (IR) spectrometer provides data from 4000 to 600 cm-1 (wavenumbers) helping to identify various functional groups on a molecule. The instrument also has a 2 cm-1 nominal resolution and four scanning speeds (3, 6, 12, and 24 minutes). The instrument and data acquisition is controlled through the EZ Scan software. The laboratory maintains 2 of these instruments.

The instrument includes two independently temperature controlled detectors: a Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) and Flame Ionization Detector (FID). The oven can be temperature programmed in 1oC increments with a programming rate of 0.1oC to 40oC/min. Maximum column temperature range is 450oC. The Packard 9100 Hydrogen Generator eliminates the need for expensive, dangerous, high pressure cylinders of hydrogen in the laboratory. Generator flow capacities of up to 1200 mL/min of ultra-high purity hydrogen are available. Offering many special features to ensure safe and convenient operation, this hydrogen generator includes low-water audible alarms to indicate when the water reservoir needs filling and automatic shutdown to protect expensive laboratory equipment. Currently the hydrogen generator is used in conjunction with the GOW MAC 600 FID detector.
