Submission Guidelines for English Department Creative Writing Awards
Participants must have been enrolled in a Creative Writing Class for 2012-2013.
Four genre categories are available in the Creative Writing Awards category: poetry, flash fiction, short fiction, and creative non-fiction. Specific guidelines apply to each category.
The online cover letter information must be completed for each submission.
Each Category is Awarded a Single prize of 150.00 dollars for best in Category.
Students’ names should not appear anywhere on the actual writing.
Poetry Guidelines
- Submit 1-3 poems (maximum: 60 lines) in any form, style, or theme.
- Punctuation, spelling, editing, and line design are important regardless of form.
- Single-space poems in Times New Roman 12 point font. Center titles.
- If submitting more than one poem: include all poems in one MS WORD file with clearly divided lines and title
Flash Fiction Guidelines
(Genre Interpretation: This is a very short story with a compressed plot in first, second, or third person perspective.)
- 1 flash fiction piece
- Maximum: 500 words.
- Times New Roman 12-point font
- Double-spaced
- Paragraph, spell-check, and edit carefully
- Center the title.
Short Fiction Guidelines
- 1 short story
- Maximum 3,500 words
- Times New Roman 12-point font
- Double-spaced
- First, second, or third person perspective
- Consistent verb tenses and point-of-view
- Paragraph, spell-check, punctuate, and edit carefully
Creative Non-Fiction Guidelines
- 1 creative non-fiction piece
- Personal essays and/or memoir are acceptable
- No academic analysis or literature essays qualify
- Maximum 3,500 words
- Times New Roman 12-point font
- Double-spaced
- Standard English but may use creative approach
