Online Courses

What is an online course?

Cape Fear Community College offers two main types of Online Learning courses:

Internet courses meet completely online. Students receive lessons, complete assignments, and communicate in a virtual classroom (some course require face-to-face proctored testing or presentations at approved sites).

Hybrid courses meet onsite and online, as designated on the course schedule. While these courses utilize some of the same technologies as Internet courses, students also attend some face-to-face sessions.

Are online courses self-paced? What are they like?

Online courses are not self-paced. They have the structure and deadlines like a face-to-face course. You should login to your online course often to keep up with deadlines and assignments. Your instructor will inform you of when homework, assignments and test are due.

What web browsers are recommended for online courses?

Microsoft Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome

Apple (Mac) computers come with the Safari web-browser. Safari may work, but is not fully compatible.

Please make sure your Web Browsers are up-to-date with current versions. To verify you have a compatible web-browser, perform a Browser Check.

How do I register for an online course?

Registration for online courses is the same as traditional courses. Login to your myCFCC account (http://my.cfcc.edu) and click WebAdvisor.
From there click “Students.”
“Register for Sections.”
“Search and Register.”
In the Location field select WWW to filter results for Internet courses only. Internet courses will be designated with an “I.” For a Hybrid class look for a “Y” in the course name such as DY1 or DY2. More information can be found at this tutorial.

I registered for an online course, where is it?

Most Online Courses are located on our Blackboard site. Login to your myCFCC account (http://my.cfcc.edu) and click the button that says Bb “My Courses.” Is a textbook required for an online course?

Most online courses require a book and some will require an online code, often provided with the textbook. Both of these can be purchased at the bookstore on campus. See your course for specific details.

My course has a “My __ Lab”, what is that?

Some courses require an additional lab component outside of Blackboard. These are commonly known as MyLab. For example MyMathLab, MyEnglishLab. etc. These labs require an access code that is often bundled together with the course book. Be aware that if you buy your book used, you will need to purchase a new access code. Your instructor will give you directions on how to access and setup your MyLab, and provide you with a course code that is already required.

What if I cannot access MyLab?

Please contact your instructor for MyLab help. The Online Learning department does not have any access to MyLab sites, and cannot troubleshoot login problems. Pearson Technical Support can be reached at this number: # 800-677-6337 (12PM-8PM) or additional numbers found here.

My instructor said I must complete an Enrollment Verification. What is that?

Enrollment Verification (EV) is CFCC’s way of checking that students are attending courses. In a face-to-face (physical classroom) course, this is done by checking student’s actual presence in the classroom. In an Online or Hybrid course, students are required to complete an EV activity. Your instructor will indicate this assignment by name or by emphasizing that it must be completed by a certain date. It is incredibly important that you complete the EV assignment by the deadline. If you do not, you will be unenrolled from the course as a “No-Show.” More information can be found here.

I tried to contact my instructor, but I have not received a response yet.

Standard response times for an online course are 48 hours during the week and 72 hours during the weekend. Please allow the appropriate amount of time to pass before you contact the instructor again. If you have tried multiple times, please contact the college at 910-362-7000 and ask to be transferred to your instructor’s office. If you have tried contacting your instructor by phone to no avail, please ask to speak to their Department Chair.
